After graduating with a design degree from Frostburg State University, Steve spent two years in Japan, which had a profound effect on his perspective as an artist. His goal when throwing, glazing, alter- ing, decorating or firing is to create
surfaces that reflect the process and forces that go into turning a piece of clay into a functional piece of pottery. He especially loves making mugs: “I make every mug with the hope that it will become part of somebody’s daily morning ritual,” he says. During this year’s tour, weather permitting, Steve will in- clude demonstrations of the Raku firing process.
